Because inspired casting looks beyond the cookie cutter.
Because inspired casting looks beyond the cookie cutter.
Wow. It's funny what a pandemic can do. People died. Lots of people died. For me, COVID destroyed the momentum I was gathering in 2019 and spit me out somewhere barren and demoralizing.
At the very beginning of the lockdown, as the industry scrambled to figure out how to keep its members safe and productions froze like they were doing that game in Squid Game, the medium fish jumped back into the small fish pond, and the small fish pond edged many talented people out.
Meanwhile, "diversity" and "authentic casting" became a double edged sword for minorities at the fringes of the established stereotype.
Change is happening at the wrong tier of the pyramid. *sigh*
Self-taped auditions mean that everyone and their mom can audition - and Casting can see 10x the submissions. People who aren't normally full time actors can throw their names in the hat. As much as I hated the hassle of commuting an hour each way for a 7 minute audition, I really miss the ability of Casting to give direction, so you at least have a clue of what they're really looking for.
Do they even have the time and luxury of imagining what an actor can offer with a different look or approach?
Time will tell. All I know is that I always hear about people looking for the next big (young) star, but I'm not quite seeing the ads for "break-out character actor coming out of their prime years". DOH.
In the meantime, I had some fun very recently, introducing a look that in all these years, no one has ever associated with me.
Remember how Angel became a different kind of vampire when he got his soul back (thank you, Buffy!)? Well, I practised law for almost a decade, even thoubh I knew it wasn't my calling. When I had my daughter, I realized I would be a hypocrite if I told her to follow her dreams when I did not.
So here I am. A visible minority, plus sized middle aged woman starting out in an industry that doesn’t immediately think of people like me when it comes to creating and casting roles. Unfettered by unrealistic expectations and delusions of grandeur, I relish the ability to support productions, not to try to shine brighter than anyone. Bit by bit, I intend to trample all over stereotypes, all the while doing what I love .
Hold my beer.
